Here's another one of those blogs that is going to be tough to write, because there are so many things I want to say, I don't know where to start.
On 06.05.04, America lost an important part of it's history.
We lost our 40th President of the United states, Ronald Wilson Reagan. Today, 02.06.11 would have been President Reagan's 100th Birthday and I believe it's important to mark the occasion.
Personally, I believe President Reagan was the best President in our nation's history.
That's my opinion.
I think that with time, history will show I'm close to being right, if not spot on.
Here is a man that had a rough childhood, his father was an alcoholic.
He went on to play football in high School, was a News Sportscaster. He ended up in California....Hollywood, where as an actor he starred in 53 films, and did work on the small screen too.
He was President of the Screen Actors Guild. As time went on, this Democrat switched parties to Republican, ended up running for Governor of California and served Two Terms.
In 1976, as America was licking it's wounds after Watergate, He ran in the Primary Election against then President Gerald Ford. President Ford went on to win the Primary, but lost to Gov. Jimmy Carter (D_GA).
We all remember how President Carter's 1st term fared.
Gov. Reagan won the Republican nomination for President and went on to beat President Carter easily in November of 1980.
Quick note here : This was my first chance to vote as I turned 18 in Nov.'77. Pretty easy to guess who I voted for.
President Reagan had a steep hill to climb, another quick note. He was elected at 69 years old and turned 70 a few weeks after Inauguration day.
He faced mind boggling inflation, double digit jnterest rates, skyrocketing unemployment, but this was a man who was ready for a challenge.
It took almost until his second term started, until we could enjoy the fruits of his labor. massive tax cuts, reduced Federal spending, contributed to his success.
There were a few bumps along the way. 69 days into his first term, a lone gunman, John Hinkley made an attempt on President's life, outside the Washington Hilton.
As bullets were flying the President did get hit in the chest where a bullet did enter his lung. The President's Press Secratary James Brady received the worst injuries. He suffered life disabling head wounds. He has been wheelchair bound since that terrible day. President Reagan did make it through surgery, Thank God.
Another sad day in America that President Reagan helped to comfort us by giving a T.V. message.
Tuesday, 01.28.86 The Space Shuttle Challenger was set for another voyage.
It wasn't meant to be. 73 seconds into orbit, the Space Shuttle exploded before the eyes of a watching world.
America, and the world were numb, and President Reagan went on T.V. that evening to comfort everyone. And he did a good job.
President Reagan, the Great Communicator, just had a way of talking to us. Who could forget his "Mr.Gorbachev, Tear down this Wall" speech on 06.12.87, referring to the Berlin Wall.
President Reagan left office on 1.20.89 @ 77 years young.
Unfortunately, President Reagan's last public appearance was at the Republican Convention 1n 1992. The President was starting to show signs of Alzheimers Disease.
In 1994 He wrote a letter to the Citizens of the United States explaining his sad medical news. It seemed lke a "goodbye" letter, but I think he wanted to make people aware of this horrible disease.
This was a long blog. It was for a special person. I hope I held your interest.
Godspeed Mr. President, we miss you !
